Physicians have been well aware of the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for patients with hyperlipidemia and chronic inflammation and have been recommending this supplement alone or in addition to prescription medications. The most commonly recommended omega-3 supplement currently is either over-the-counter fish oil or prescription Lovaza.
Fish oil is an economical choice for most patients, however the recommended dose is at least 4 grams which most patients are unable to continue on a long term basis. After the introduction of Lovaza, the pharmaceutical representatives educated the physicians that 4 grams of Lovaza was equal to at least 12-16 fish oil tablets, however again the 4 grams of Lovaza was difficult for most patients to sustain. The major reason for the poor compliance on the recommended dose of either supplement is the large capsule and fishy aftertaste. Patients have a difficult time taking one pill per day much less 4 large, as they say, ?horse pills.?
Moxxor has given us a great new option for our patients with not only hyperlipidemia and chronic inflammation but a large variety of other common medical disorders. The ease of the maintenance dose of two small, easily swallowed, tasteless pills makes it more likely for patients to be compliant on the physician?s recommendation. Additionally, if Moxxor is 158 times more potent than fish oil then it must be at least 13% more potent than prescription Lovaza. Lovaza, still a new drug, will usually have a higher co-pay than Moxxor at $60/bottle, especially for cash paying patients who do not have a prescription drug plan.
The major reason I am now choosing Moxxor for my patients is for the higher potency, the combination of an anti-oxidant (no other omega-3 has this), and hope that the compliance rate will be higher with an easier capsule to swallow.
